Should Beijing’s 5-Year Plan For “Absolute” Food Security Worry Other Nations?
That was the subject of my latest briefing for journalists at the invitation of the National Press Foundation on July 27.
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, China spent $185.9 billion in farm subsidies in 2019, making it the world’s largest subsidizer of agriculture. This amount is almost four times the amount spent by the U.S. and more than the EU, the U.S. and Japan combined. It’s a trend that could reshape global agricultural commodity markets.
